About Us

Indigo Island was born in the summer of 2006 after I realised that there had to be more to living in paradise than lazing on the beach or by the pool with a rum punch in hand.

Starting purely as an outlet for the handcrafted jewellery I love to make, Indigo quickly grew. First came the geckos, then came those Tortuga Rum Cakes, and now we like to think of Indigo as a unique place on the web where you can find high quality products from around the Caribbean, but with a definate bias to those produced locally in Barbados.

We are located on the beautiful island of Barbados in the Caribbean, in a stunning old pink plantation house, surrounded by sugar cane fields that are still harvested and run as a working sugar plantation today.

For those who have never visited Barbados, it's famous for stunning white coral sand beaches swathed with shady lush palm trees, cricket (well - we are in the West Indies!) and of course Rum Punch!

Indigo

a. Any of various shrubs or herbs of the genus Indigofera in the pea family, having odd-pinnate leaves and usually red or purple flowers in axillary racemes.

b. A blue dye obtained from these plants or produced synthetically.

In 1625, Captain John Powell landed on the west coast of Barbados to claim the island for England in the name of King James I.

Many of the early settlers were misfits from English society including gamblers and kidnappers. Younger sons of wealthy English families also came to Barbados to claim land, money, and a chance at starting a life of their own. The first settlers planted crops such as tobacco, cotton, ginger, and indigo, in addition to producing their own food.
